Coding: Four reasons why your child should learn coding

What is coding?

Coding is the process of creating instructions for computers using programming languages. Computer code is used to program the websites, apps and other technologies we interact with every day.

Why is coding important for children?

We live in a highly digitalized world today, where coding plays a central role in most things we do. From Advanced computer algorithms, Biometrics, Artificial Intelligence and smart cars that drive themselves, coding has taken over our lives. Hence, teaching kids coding will empower them for a more digitalized future.

When can kids learn coding?

Teaching a child to code is like teaching them a new language. Most kids are exposed to technology as consumers. Eg, they play video games on their phones, ipads, watch YouTube on their PCs, and know how to use to Siri and Alexa. Introducing more complex technological skills to kids at a young age, will help them absorb these skills a lot faster. They are able to apply these skills with more flexibility and able to nurture it for years to come.

Benefits of coding for kids

1. Self-confidence

By equipping our kids with technological skills in a highly digitalized world, we empower them to be leaders in their own right. This helps in building their self-esteem and confidence as they head out into the world. The way children interact with technology changes when they are equipped with just fundamental skills of coding. This skill not only empowers kids to consume technology in a different way but also to create it.

2. Logical rationalisation

Computer coding is said to involve the left side of the brain which is generally used for applying logic to most situations, linear thinking and sequencing. However, children, predominantly use the right side of their brain in order to solve problems through intuition, visualisation and imagination. Programming a computer involves being able to impart a set of instructions to break down problems in an organised manner. Therefore, code inspires kids to view the world differently.

3. Creativity

Coding can be a lot of fun, as it requires a lot of creativity. Coding enables children to develop video games, apps and websites. Through their creations, children can watch their coding come to life. It also helps children in other creative pursuits like writing and oral communication.

Learner Circle has curated some fun courses for children that will cater to their creative side and their aptitude for technical know-how.

4. Persistence and Perseverance

Coding is challenging, frustration and can be incredibly complex. These factors can teach children problem-solving and creative ways to look for solutions. By experimenting with coding and using their imagination, children learn the art of persistence and perseverance. This also helps them build resilience towards the failures they may experience during their learning experience.
